Getting Involved as a Parent
Parents fulfill special roles at the JCCNS to help with the support and running of the school. Participation is not required, but very welcome! There are many ways to be involved. Volunteers earn drop in credits for their time. Open positions are advertised to all parents at the beginning of the school year or as they become available.
Board Volunteers
Parents serving on the board handle administrative tasks and help make important decisions for our school, such as tuition rates, policies, hours, hiring of staff, and addressing issues that come up during the year.
Classroom Support Volunteers
There are many opportunities to serve supportive roles at the JCCNS. These positions include:
Classroom Volunteers
Classroom Volunteers assist in the classroom when a teacher is absent or an extra pair of hands is needed. Volunteers are always under the direction and supervision of a trained teacher. In accordance with Pennsylvania Act 15, we require all adults having direct volunteer contact with children complete the following background check clearances. These clearances are good for 5 years and can be used in the SCASD for volunteering as well.

Board Volunteers
Parents serving on the board handle administrative tasks and help make important decisions for our school, such as tuition rates, policies, hours, hiring of staff, and addressing issues that come up during the year.
- President: Responsible for overseeing the Board; works in larger organization and policy issues; arranges and leads meetings once a month; maintains the most complete record of Nursery School business, activities, etc.; in charge of larger maintenance issues.
- Treasurer: Maintains financial records for the Nursery School; writes checks, collects tuition and other fees; prepares materials to help the board make financial decisions. Collects time sheets from teachers, relays and processes payroll for teachers and interns. Files tax forms once a year. Maintains records for drop-in credits. Gives a financial report at each board meeting. Maintains school insurance policy. Responsible for teacher contracts with President.
- Assistant Treasurer: Support person for Treasurer. Helps with tasks assigned by Treasurer.
- Registrar: Liaison to parents of prospective students; addresses parents’ questions about the school, tuition and available slots; assists to maintain accurate and up-to-date files of information on each student; advertises the Nursery School and its Open House with flyers and print ads.
- Secretary and Records: Takes minutes during board meetings, keeps parents informed about Board meetings and pertinent issues that come up during meetings.
- School Administrator: Plans curriculum and field trips, maintains sub Clearances and student records, assures that all teachers have updated First Aid certifications, finds parent subs, maintains safety and security of school, attends monthly board meetings to act as liaison between teachers and board, submits staff time sheets, works with Registrar on recruitment events, schedules and gives tours to prospective families, and writes Scroll submissions.
Classroom Support Volunteers
There are many opportunities to serve supportive roles at the JCCNS. These positions include:
- Supplies and Snacks: This volunteer uses school funds to purchase requested supplies and weekly snacks and delivers them to the classroom.
- Website Coordinator: The website coordinator maintains the website and manages email lists, as well as the public and secret Facebook groups.
- Fundraising Committee: The fundraising committee identifies and schedules fundraisers to benefit the school. They also prepare donation requests.

- FBI Criminal Background Check
- Complete if you have not been a Pennsylvania resident for the past ten years. You must use the code 1KG6Y3 to ensure that the background check is submitted for the correct purpose of volunteering in schools.
- If you have been a Pennsylvania resident for the past ten years you will need to submit a Self Disclosure Form instead.
