A Typical Day at our School
Each morning and afternoon session at the JCCNS brings new experiences and activities. Your child's day will depend on which sessions they enroll in, the weather, interests of the children, and activities planned for that day. Here are our session times and an example of a typical day.
Session Times:
Morning Session - 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
Arrival at school, free play (8:30 to 9:00 am): Children are free to choose what they would like to play with. Teachers set out table games and different stations that vary from day to day. Some examples include: play dough, a small craft project, and fine motor activities, such as stringing beads or grabbing eggs with "scissors." If a child wants, he or she can have a one-on-one story time.
Clean Up Time (9:00 to 9:15): Everyone helps while singing the clean up song!
Learning Stations (9:15 to 9:45): Small group activities: crafts, coloring.
Circle Time (9:45 to 10:05): Children sing songs, chose helpers for the day, talk about the calendar, the weather, and the schedule.
Snack (10:05 to 10:20): Typical snacks include a fruit or vegetable, crackers, or a baked dish prepared in class such as muffins. On Fridays the class celebrates Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath). Activities include baking challah (a kind of bread), saying prayers over juice, candles and the challah, singing, and talking about the day of rest.
Group Activity or Story Time (10:20 to 10:50): The main activity of the day varies from day to day: a craft, a science project, cooking, or whatever else the teachers have up their sleeves. Children are involved in choosing the topics and themes.
Story Time or Creative Time (11:00 to 11:15): Children listen to a story and talk about it. Stories often are chosen because they fit the current theme. Creative time could include songs, music, and/or exercise.
Get ready for outdoor play (11:20 to 11:30)
Outdoor (free) Play (11:30 to 12:00): Children are free to ride bikes, play on equipment (slides, tire swing, tunnel, swings, play bus), explore the playhouse, or enjoy the sensory table. On rainy and cold days, children use the large indoor space upstairs.
Morning pick-up time (12:00 pm)
Afternoon Session - 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Lunch & Quiet play (12:00 to 12:45): Students finish lunch and do quiet activities
Group Activity (12:45 to 1:15): Students participate in a structured activity such as arts and crafts or a game.
